Tread Maintenance Trainings
Tread training teaches volunteers how California State Parks designs and maintains sustainable trail surfaces. The focus is on understanding how water, soil, and trail shape work together to keep a trail durable, safe, and predictable for all users. Participants learn the core principles behind tread construction—drainage, outslope, soil behavior, and how to identify and fix common tread problems—then practice those techniques in the field under State Parks guidance. Completing this training is required for anyone who wants to work on tread during volunteer projects on State Parks trails.
Vegetation Management Trainings
Vegetation management trainings teach volunteers how to safely and effectively clear brush, prune vegetation, and maintain sightlines along California State Parks trails. The focus is on understanding how plants impact trail safety, user experience, and long‑term sustainability. Participants learn State Parks standards for trimming, tool use, corridor dimensions, and how to remove vegetation without damaging habitat or creating erosion issues. The training includes both classroom guidance and hands‑on field practice. Completing this training is required for volunteers who want to help with vegetation work on State Parks trails.
